In 1975, the whole world learned of the death of a man who had never existed. An obituary for Hercule Poirot appeared on the front page of a newspaper. It was the first and only instance of its kind in history. I was struck by this fact. How could a fictional character become so real? “Poirot in Detail” is neither an encyclopedia nor a biography. It is a personal exploration of the phenomenon of a character who has remained surprisingly alive for several generations of readers and viewers.
